Car detailing has become such a popular term that it has its own Wikipedia entry, which reads: ‘An optimised process of comprehensive cleaning, renovation and maintenance of a motor vehicle or its components, both inside and out, in order to improve the aesthetic and functional qualities of the vehicle and extend its lifespan’. However, this is not an exhaustive definition, and it certainly does not describe a service that is often priced at several thousand zlotys. So what exactly is car detailing?
The most accurate description may be that it is a service for people with a heightened sense of aesthetics. Detailing is for people who notice the beauty of details and love motoring. We cannot force anyone to get into car detailing; it has to come from our inner need to take care of our car. However, it is worth remembering that detailing is not only a ‘feast for the eyes’, but also an extension of the lifespan and care of individual materials, which are increasingly of poorer quality.
Pillars of detailing
To make it easier to understand the idea of detailing, it can be divided into four pillars:
- Cleaning/Washing.
- Polishing/Renovation.
- Protection.
- Care.
Cleaning and Washing
Both of these activities are hard work, especially if you are working on an older car and its comprehensive restoration. However, they are an essential part of detailing.
We start the whole process with washing, where the only limit is the customer's time and budget. First, we clean the paint, all the gaps, and the surfaces between the badges, and we also remove the wheels and wheel arches, and wash the chassis and engine. We can do the same with the interior of the car. It is common practice to remove seats, plastic parts or the floor. Of course, the scope of this work is always adjusted to the current condition of individual vehicle components.
What do we actually clean? Car washing is mainly associated with rinsing off sand and washing the surface with shampoo. Well, it's not that simple. The surface of the paint, rims, windows or other external elements is covered with a large amount of tar, tree resin, brake pad dust and other metallic impurities, especially if you park close to a railway line or factories. On the car body, you can also find hard water stone, which settles if you do not dry the paint after washing. Looking at the interior, we mainly have cases of dirt related to food, drinks, sand stuck in the carpet or grease on the windows, as well as plastics. If we do not remove all these impurities, there is no point in moving on to the next stage, and we certainly should not protect such surfaces.
Polishing is not detailing
Polishing or renovation arouse the most emotions among people interested in detailing, because for most people detailing is the same as polishing. However, as you can see, it is only one of the pillars, but it is just as important as any other.
Why do we notice polishing so much? Probably because after just a few passes with a properly selected machine, polish and pad, we can see spectacular effects on painted elements. I deliberately used the word elements because we can polish not only the bodywork, but also the rims, windows, lights, as well as decorative elements inside the car covered with a glossy clear coat. Looking at this process, it does not look difficult, but this is only an illusion.
When you look into the surfaces we work on and the machines, polishes, sponges and brushes available on the market, you can be overwhelmed by their quantity and variety. The key to success is to understand the process, i.e. what actually happens when polishing a surface and when which polish works best.
Renovation, on the other hand, is not just about polishing; it also involves minor paint touch-ups, leather painting and the visual repair of other surfaces. In short, at this stage, we transform old into new.
Protection
We have spent several hours cleaning and another two hours polishing. Now it is time to protect the results of our hard work. After all, we do not want to repeat the same process in a few weeks.
There is a wide range of protective products available. We divide them according to the surface they are intended for, the effect we want to achieve, and their durability. The easiest way to explain this is with the example of paint coatings. When choosing a coating for a customer's car, we always conduct an interview. The basis is the average annual mileage, information on whether the car is garaged, whether we wash it ourselves, or perhaps at random car washes (which is not advisable) and finally, what colour it is. Thanks to this information, we know how durable the coating should be and how often it needs to be serviced.
The customer does not have to invest in expensive and durable products if the car is only used in summer and has a very low mileage. The visual effect and the performance of the coating itself are important and here we often choose it according to the customer's paintwork and habits of regularly washing the car. Some coatings darken the car very much, others give a glassy effect and emphasise the grain and pearl, others have a higher chemical resistance. There are also coatings that have little self-regeneration properties. The subject is very broad, so you need the right experience, knowledge of the products and, above all, a conversation with the customer.
And finally, care!
We are well aware that using a car involves regular maintenance, changing the oil, filters and tyres. The same goes for detailing. If you want to enjoy the result for as long as possible, you have to take care of it. It is worth adding that it is easier to care for a protected car. Unfortunately, car detailing is not so magical that a car will not get dirty and scratched, and we will limit washing to rinsing at a touchless car wash. However, everyone will certainly appreciate the longer and better ‘new car’ effect.
Won't detailing ruin our pockets?
How much does car detailing cost and how long does it take? It all depends on the scope of services and the condition of the individual surfaces and, of course, the size of the vehicle. A new car, which requires little cleaning and where the focus is mainly on protection, takes 8-15 hours of work. On the other hand, record projects have taken up to 250 working hours.
The price we pay for detailing is, of course, time, but also materials, which do not always have to be very expensive. However, if we need really durable protection because we use the vehicle intensively, the amount increases. We will certainly find services that cost from PLN 1500, the more demanding and durable ones cost around PLN 4-5 thousand. However, for long-term, comprehensive services, the price can reach even five-figure amounts.
