When planning paintwork on a car, one of the most important issues is knowing how many hours or minutes will be needed for each individual step. This knowledge will allow for better time management and more efficient completion of the work. It will also enable us to plan all activities effectively so that we do not have to force the paint to dry. This way, we can also avoid applying too many base or clear coats too quickly or too late.
What affects the drying time of car paint?
It is difficult to determine exactly how long car paint takes to dry because many factors influence this. These include, among others:
- the thickness and number of layers applied,
- the choice of products and their composition,
- weather conditions: temperature, humidity,
- the use or non-use of technology to accelerate drying.
However, it is possible to determine the approximate drying time of car paint and to assess the importance of the individual aspects mentioned above.
If you apply a very thin coat and the previous coat is already dry, you can continue working immediately. On the other hand, applying thick coats will not only increase the waiting time, but may also result in a less attractive end result. If you use two-component car paints, you can determine more precisely how many hours you need to reserve for applying the subsequent layers. All you have to do is read the instructions of the product manufacturer. It is important to remember that the drying time of the vehicle also depends on the temperature and humidity in the room.
Which varnishes dry the fastest?
When determining the curing time of a 2K clear coat with a suitable hardener, the type of clear coat must be taken into account. If you have mixed the clear coat yourself with a hardener, it is difficult to say how long it will take to dry. However, if we use a ready-made product, we can more accurately determine whether we will wait about twenty minutes or several hours.
There are three types of car paint:
- two-component acrylic paints,
- conventional base paints,
- water-based base paints.
Acrylic paints require the addition of a hardener to the colour, and to completely cover the surface it is necessary to apply about 2-4 layers depending on the colour. Each layer requires about 5 minutes of drying time.
Conventional base coats (thinner-based) do not require the addition of a hardener, but require the application of a clear coat over the colour. In this case, the total drying time consists of the time between the base coats (until the surface is fully covered) – about 5 minutes for each coat, 10-15 minutes before applying the clear coat, and the drying time of the clear varnish with hardener – about 1.5-2 coats. The drying time between coats depends on the type of clear varnish and hardener. It will take several hours to dry completely, and we will not be able to polish it until after two days.
The application technique for water-based basecoats is essentially the same as for conventional basecoats. Only the drying time between basecoat layers until the surface is fully covered is extended – to about 7 minutes per layer.
The curing time of the acrylic primer must also be added to the total drying time for renovation work. Without the use of drying cabins, the acrylic primer will reach its final, hardened structure after about twelve hours. Even so, you will not feel any moisture after just one hour.
How can you speed up the drying of car paint?
What if we are pressed for time? Is there a way to speed up all these processes? We have good news – you can finish your car work faster, but it requires specialised equipment.
There are special cabin dryers that increase the temperature to make the bodywork dry faster. However, these are only available in professional car workshops and are not something you would buy for your garage. The second method is to use infrared radiators. The principle of drying car paint in this way is actually the same, as it is all about raising the temperature. Infrared radiators are, however, more accessible for amateurs who want to work on their car themselves.
