How to remove rust from your car

Frequent exposure to weather conditions, lack of proper bodywork care and microdamage to the paint surface can cause a characteristic brown coating to appear even on the most well-maintained car body. Rust not only looks very unsightly, but above all, it significantly weakens the structure of the sheet metal and is a phenomenon that will only get worse. Quick removal of rust spots will not only restore your car to its former glory, but above all, save you costly repairs and replacements in the future.

The parts most commonly affected by rust are the bonnet, boot lid, sills, wheel arches and lower part of the doors. The coating can spread very quickly, as factors such as moisture, salt used to grit the roads in winter, as well as dirt and dust, promote the formation of further corrosion. A visit to a paint shop can be expensive, but fortunately, with the right methods and products, you can remove rust from your car yourself.

How to clean rust?

The first step is to mechanically remove the rust. for small areas, sandpaper is sufficient, or you can apply a special anti-corrosion remover. More problematic will certainly be areas where there is a lot of rust and chips and unsightly bubbles begin to form. In such cases, it may be necessary to use a special wire brush. To prevent corrosion from reappearing on the bodywork in a few weeks, it is important to clean the rusted area thoroughly, down to the bare metal. Before starting to sand with sandpaper, it is also worth protecting areas where the paintwork is not damaged with tape or foil.

After removing the rusty coating, you may find that there are significant defects in the bodywork. To fill them, you can use a special repair kit, which includes car filler with a hardener and sandpaper. Before proceeding with the repairs, the sheet metal must be thoroughly cleaned of all contaminants. Silicone removers are best suited for this purpose. Once the dirt has been removed, we can move on to the main part - cut the mat to fit the defect, then mix a small amount of filler with the hardener and apply it to the target area. The product dries very quickly and not only fills the dent in the sheet metal, but also strengthens the structure of the entire repaired structure. If necessary, gently sand down any excess filler so that the surface is smooth and free of scratches and unevenness.

How to protect the bodywork against corrosion recurrence?

The final stage is painting. During this stage, it is a good idea to use protective film and adhesive tape again. It is also good practice to perform this activity in a special paint booth, as this will prevent dust or contamination of the painted surface.

Before painting the bodywork, it is worth protecting it with a layer of primer, which will prevent the reappearance of rust spots. Only after it has dried can you proceed to applying the first coat of base paint. To ensure that the repaired area does not differ from the rest of the bodywork, it is of course necessary to choose the right colour – it is best to use the vehicle's nameplate (OEM code) for this purpose. The application itself should be carried out in accordance with the technical instructions for the product, usually in thin layers.

The final stage of removing rust from the car is to apply a layer of clear coat. This will protect the base coat from external factors.
