Minor scratches, chips or paint damage can happen to any car owner. Although they may seem like a cosmetic problem at first, they can lead to more serious issues such as corrosion over time. That's why it's good to know how to do paint touch-ups to effectively protect the bodywork and maintain the aesthetics of the vehicle.

How to do touch-ups step by step?

Preparation and care are the most important aspects of the repair process. Follow the steps below for a long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing result:

Surface preparation

Touch-ups are mainly used for small stone chips and minor scratches. They should not be carried out on rust-covered surfaces - in this case, it is necessary to remove the corrosion beforehand. In contrast to larger paint repairs, in the case of touch-ups, we do not sand the damaged area to avoid enlarging the repair area. It is enough to thoroughly clean and degrease the surface with petroleum ether or another cleaning agent.

Applying paint

For touch-ups, a paint bottle with a small brush is usually used, which allows for precise application. The varnish is applied in a thin layer, gently filling the damage. For deeper chips, several layers can be applied, waiting for each one to dry. Finally, it is worth applying a clear varnish, which will protect the coating and restore its shine.

Polishing

After the varnish has completely dried, preferably after 24 hours, you can start polishing. Gently using polishing paste will smooth out the repair area and even out differences in the varnish structure. This will make the repair less visible and the surface will regain a uniform appearance.

How to match the varnish to the touch-ups?

Matching the paint color is an important step. Using the wrong shade can make the repair look different than expected. The paint code can be found in the following places:

  • the nameplate – its location varies depending on the vehicle model, but it is most often found at the fuel filler, on the B-pillar, in the trunk, on the driver's door or under the hood;
  • the VIN number – if the paint code is not visible on the plate, it can be read at the service center using the VIN number.

For small scratches, paint in a paint brush is ideal, while for larger areas, spray paint or application with a paint gun will work better.

When is it worth doing paint touch-ups?

Any damage to the paint, regardless of its size, can lead to further deterioration of the protective coating of the car body. It is worth dealing with the problem as soon as possible, especially in the case of:

  • delicate scratches, e.g. from a key or a branch,
  • scuffs caused by maneuvering in the parking lot,
  • chips caused by stones.

Even minor damage can turn into a place prone to corrosion over time, so it is better to act in advance, before the problem gets worse.
