Painters who want to make a change and start using waterborne technology instead of solvent, are often interested in the differences in the way of color selection in these two systems. These two systems have very similar components, which are: a set of colorants, formula program, weight and color templates. If the mixture needs tinting, we can make use of the colour wheel – which illustrates the organization of colour hues around a circle, and shows the relationships between colours. Please note that lighting is a crucial factor which cannot be ignored. What is more, daylight is the best time to assess the color - otherwise, we should use a special lamp, which imitates sunlight. Color selection starts with finding in the formula program a color number we are interested in. The colour number is placed in various places on the car body, location depends on the car model or brand. Fortunately, there are some resources, also available on the Internet that help us deal with this problem. Entering the color code in the search engine, we get a recipe for a colour we are looking for at the moment. Starting from this point, the procedure changes depending on the system we use. In the case of conventional coatings, a regular stirring is fundamental, otherwise the resin - one of their component can settle on the bottom. This causes uneven distribution of pigment in the paint, thus the results of color mix may differ from the intended effect. In the case of waterborne system which is mostly based on the gel-resins - it is enough to shake a few times before use. During mixing of conventional paint components, a colour tone may be pre-assessed already on the measure stick. When we take waterborne paints into consideration, the procedure is different, because wet color is dissimilar from what we get when it dries. Therefore, to make a proper assessment of the color, it is necessary to perform a spray test. Aqualine seems to be an exception from the process already depicted, here, the color on the measure stick resembles the final result. Mixture tinting in these two systems is very similar and is carried out in accordance with the same principles. Other differences are related to the method of application itself, I meanshading or using water-based paints. What is vital, waterborne paints are less detrimental to human body (less spray mist), and to the environment, and that constitutes a great advantage.
